Halal eating in Helsinki: Habibi, Forum Helsinki City Center.

21 Nov

Another great and convenient place to get some good halal food in Helsinki is Habibi, the setup is like a fast food restaurant. So naturally the prices are cheap as compared to Fez, in fact very cheap. They have a Halal sign right at the face the shop, usually chicken is always halal, but as always its best to ask them. The staff can speak English, Finnish and probably Arabic as well.

So try it sometimes :)

Introducing www.namaz.me

19 Sep

One problem I have always had was getting the Namaz/Salat times for the place I am at a certain time, now there are web sites which give you that information. But there is too much hassle involved in getting the required information. You first have to select your country, then your city and then you are bombarded with lots of advertisements and so on.

I thought that there must be a simpler way. I was aware of the new w3c geolocation api, which is available in firefox 3.5 and in google chrome ( with a certain google plugin, in other browsers as well ). So I decided to use that API in browsers where it would be available, and use IP Geolocation ( from ipinfodb.com ) to get the latitude and longitude position where I am at a certain. After that it is just a mathematical equation to get all the prayer times.

The user interface of the web site is very simple, infact I copied the iphone UI. But the application should theoretically work on all mobile devices ( iphone, nokia, samsung, htc etc ) on all desktop browsers ( firefox, chrome, internet explorer, safari ).

I tried to use w3c geolocation api as much as I could, but for example its not possible to use in safari, internet eplorer, older versions of firefox so then IP geolocation is used. Like wise only iphone and android devices currently support the w3c geolocation api ( android uses google gears ) so for Nokia s60/s40, Windows Mobile, and other devices IP Geolocation is used. Also the opera mini browser is officially not supported and probably never will be, the reason for that is because opera mini uses its servers located in Norway to fetch the data, and www.namaz.me will always think that the user is in Norway. Same is true also for skyfire.

IP Geolocation is not accurate, in some cases it can be only as accurate as the country level.

So do give www.namaz.me a try and report bugs etc.

c++ std::string

10 Jul

the c++ string or more specifically std::string is a great improvement over the c-strings which are null terminated. c++ strings use a length fields to keep track of how long the string is as compared to c-string which use the NULL ‘\0′ character to keep track of where the string ends.

The c-strings have been around for so long and are used in so many places that when people start to use the std::string they get confused. For example today i wanted to use std::string to hold binary data, i knew that this was possible but i couldn’t figure out how. Then stack overflow came to the rescue. This question is explained very well there.

Thanks Stack Overflow :)

Iranians are being played.

21 Jun

I just want to say this on the record: Iranians think that they are fighting for the truth and that they are on the right track, BUT they are being played, Khomeini is right. Average iranians are as stupid as average americans, propoganda, mass propoganda

My first application on the android market.

19 Jun

I published my first app on the android market a couple of days ago. The whole experience of android development and publishing has been much different from any other platform i have been involved with earlier. Much easier is the overall conclusion, of the two new mobile platforms i.e. Android and iPhone I believe android is probably more easier to develop for, mostly because of the Java language and their use of much more universal programming approaches, iPhone has good UI development tools but objective c and some other weird things that they introduce takes a little time getting used to. There is just too much hassle involved with iPhone but it is THE platform these days if a developer wants to make serious money, my android app was downloaded more then a 100 times on its first day, and android is not even that popular yet.

Macintosh and Fanboys, a blind faith.

31 May

It seems that Apple and its fanboy have blind faith in themselves and every thing that Apple makes, they just dont want to admit that many of the products that they produce are idiotic and that there are many flaws in their environments, in their closed garden models.

For starters the mac keyboards dont have a home or end key, which is frustrating and if you dont admit it then you are just lying. Who came up with the idea of Home and End keys on a keyboard ? was it someone form Microsoft or did it exist before ? having to press two keys to get the action of home key wont cut it.

I never really thought much about the iphone app store and the tight control that apple has over developing applications for iphone or ipod until I applied for the apple developer program and it took too long for them to respond, they didnt reject me but  i just got frustrated that I cant even develop an application for myself, for a device which i paid 230 f..ing euros for. So infact apple if they choose so can lock out a particular developer or company from writing applications for iphone, and with iphone market share growing so much i wonder if this is anti competetive behaviour, seeems like what Microsoft did with IE but atleast they didnt stop people from publishing applications for Windows. Apple is getting evil more and more, money makes people evil. Imagine what apple would be like if they had more then 2% of desktop computer market, that is very scary.

So this is a relgion now, apple, a blind faith.

*this is just an experiment to see how many visitors does an apple bashing post attract*

if you were here because of that apple bashing, please relax. go outside and take a walk, go to movies with your girlfriend or what ever, relax. :)

I dont care much about apple, microsoft or linux. i use them all.

Frustrated with iPhone, happy with android

28 May

I applied to the Apple’s iPhone developer program about a month ago, I did not recieve a reply for about 3 weeks. When they did ask me to send some documents, I had a few questions which again are waiting for a reply. So I told them to cancel my request to join the iPhone developer program. Seems like they dont need any more people writing software for iPhone. I can basically agree with that, so many new apps are coming to the Apple app store every day now, making it pretty easy for an application to fall into oblivion and go un noticed. So seems like I will probably hack my iPod and move to Cydia store.

However android has been a totally different story, first of I just love the android sdk, its so much better/affordable and easier to use, I had to buy a mac mini just to be able to run the iphone sdk ( i might sell it now, with no more plans to target iphone ), unlike iphone I dont have to learn a new language, Objective-C is one of the most idiotic things I have ever seen. Java syntax is easy, eclipse is familiar, the documentation is simple and to the point. Unlike Apple I didnt have to wait for weeks with Google, I got access in just a couple of days ( that too because of weekend ). So seems like my android development days are going to start.

Still the QT port for symbian is taking too much time, and I cant  publish apps for Symbian/Nokia Ovi store unless I register a company, lets just hope that Nokia sorts those things out soon.

Benazir in the West.

27 Dec

It has been one year to her death, when she was killed the western media was “shocked” . In the west she is considered as a very good person, who did a lot for Pakistan, and ultimately paid this with her life. Which agains proves that they dont know shit, and that they only like those people who agree with their agendas, this brain washing has been so effective that almost all the common people in West believe like so. Benazir may god bless her soul, but she was not a good leader for Pakistan, she was not a saint and infact under her rule there was a lot of corruption. Pakistan did not deserve to be ruled by her. Pakistan deserves a leader who can rival Salah ud Din.
